Everyone likes to move their salary forward when they move job, right? Of course, it’s to be expected a lot of the time, but what if you have reached the natural ceiling for your particular market sector and the only opportunity to increase your salary is to commute further, move house or enter the turbulent contract market, which often means you have to do one or more of the previous points anyway? This is a familiar scenario across the IT Development market that I serve.

This morning I made a job offer to a candidate after a single interview, a good offer that matched the expectations of the candidate.  However, as I’m writing this I don’t know if the candidate is going to take it, my clients decisiveness has put the candidate in a position where he needs to commit, but what about the other interviews he's got lined up?

In my previous blog (Your skills are your greatest asset – are you looking after them?) I suggested that to the best way to manage your skills and therefore career is to move jobs regularly.  I have an obvious interest in encouraging this line of thought, but I also happen to believe that regular moves keep your CV fresh and your skills up to date, increasing your chances of remaining in employment as the ever changing world of IT continues to advance and that is one of the reasons I am still in this business after so many years.

Most of us are quite risk averse and we like to protect what we have.  We insure our homes and property, we service our cars and we put cases on our mobile phones, (even though it makes them look awful).  We do this because we understand that we fail to maintain or insure our possessions at our own risk.  We see these possessions as assets and it’s logical to protect them - but how many people think of their skill set as an asset?
